Why India Has a Hidden Deficiency Crisis
Despite India receiving abundant sunlight, Vitamin D deficiency affects 70–80% of urban adults. Similarly, Vitamin B12 and Iron deficiencies are extremely widespread, yet frequently go undetected because their symptoms — fatigue, brain fog, weakness — are easily attributed to stress or lifestyle.
These three deficiencies together affect hundreds of millions of Indians and are among the most correctable health conditions through supplementation and diet — but only once identified through testing.
Vitamin D — The Sunshine Vitamin You're Probably Missing
Vitamin D is produced by the skin when exposed to UVB sunlight. However, urban lifestyles (indoor work, sunscreen use, darker skin pigmentation) reduce synthesis significantly.
Why it matters::
• Essential for calcium absorption and bone strength
• Supports immune function and mood regulation
• Low levels are linked to chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, and increased risk of respiratory infections
Normal range:: 30–100 ng/mL. Values below 20 ng/mL indicate deficiency.
Test:: Serum 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D (25-OH Vitamin D)
Vitamin B12 — Critical for Nerves and Blood Cells
B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products (meat, fish, dairy, eggs). Vegetarians and vegans are at especially high risk of deficiency over time.
Why it matters::
• Required for red blood cell formation and neurological function
• Deficiency causes megaloblastic anaemia, nerve damage, and cognitive decline
• Symptoms include numbness/tingling in hands and feet, fatigue, and poor memory
Normal range:: 200–900 pg/mL. Below 200 pg/mL is deficient.
Test:: Serum Vitamin B12
Iron Deficiency — Most Common Nutritional Disorder
Iron deficiency is the world's most common nutritional disorder. In India, it disproportionately affects women of reproductive age, adolescents, and children.
Why it matters::
• Iron is required to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in red blood cells
• Deficiency causes anaemia: extreme fatigue, pale skin, breathlessness on exertion, impaired concentration
• Severe or prolonged deficiency affects child development and pregnancy outcomes
Tests:: Complete Blood Count (CBC), Serum Ferritin (best early marker), Serum Iron & TIBC
Note:: Serum ferritin can be low even when haemoglobin appears normal — which is why checking ferritin specifically matters for early detection.
Who Should Get Tested?
A combined Vitamin D + B12 + Iron panel is recommended for:
• Anyone experiencing chronic fatigue, hair loss, or brain fog
• Vegetarians and vegans (B12 risk)
• Women of reproductive age and pregnant women (Iron)
• Office workers with limited sun exposure (Vitamin D)
• Seniors aged 60+ (all three risk elevated)
• People with gastrointestinal conditions affecting absorption
Thyrocare offers combined vitamin and mineral panels that test all three together efficiently.
